A Reversible MA-1 Jacket Hand-Dyed with Traditional Mud Dyeing in Amami Oshima

A reversible MA-1 style jacket featuring traditional mud dyeing from Amami Oshima, Japan.

DESIGN
Inspired by the deep, dimensional black perfected through the centuries-old textile tradition of Oshima Tsumugi in Amami Oshima—a pursuit of an ultimate black rarely found in nature.
An MA-1 style blouson finished with traditional mud dyeing, carefully hand-dyed by artisans using exclusively natural materials and techniques passed down through generations.
A sashiko-stitched tape detail at the cigarette pocket adds a subtle accent.
The tape features an embroidered “KUON” logo by Sashiko GALS.
Finished with a double-zip front and reversible construction, allowing for a wide range of styling options from a single jacket.
Sashiko GALS is a project established in 2024 by approximately 15 women in their 40s to 80s living in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture. Its roots can be traced back to the Otsuchi Sashiko Project, which began as a reconstruction-support initiative following the Great East Japan Earthquake.
A special piece that combines deep, naturally derived color with functional qualities designed to support long-term, sustainable wear.
MATERIAL
The outer side is made from nylon, while the reverse features a cotton double-weave fabric with a traditional checkered pattern.
The nylon offers lightweight durability, while its moderate firmness helps create the characteristic dimensional silhouette of an MA-1.
The double-weave construction combines different weaving structures on the front and reverse sides, creating a substantial yet comfortable body with a three-dimensional checkered pattern.
The natural touch of cotton is complemented by the soft, full-bodied texture characteristic of double-weave fabrics.
Despite its simple silhouette, the fabric itself provides a distinctive presence and depth.
Designed to develop a unique patina over time, the jacket can also be re-dyed, allowing it to be worn and enjoyed for many years.

KUON has been working with traditional mud dyeing in Amami Oshima since around the previous season, and this jacket is one of the results of that ongoing effort.

The mud dyeing itself is already remarkable, but what makes this piece even more special is the combination of a nylon outer layer and a cotton double-weave checkered reverse side. It is an incredibly luxurious construction, and also a completely new silhouette for the brand.

For GANKO, this feels like one of the defining outerwear pieces of the 26AW collection.

Traditional mud dyeing is a technique that has been attracting increasing attention around the world in recent years. One example of this growing interest is the collaboration between Ralph Lauren and artisans working with traditional Japanese dyeing techniques, which drew attention at the 27SS Milan Collection.

This is also an important piece from a historical perspective.

Designer Takashi Ishibashi's KUON collection will come to an end with this season, making this a particularly meaningful garment to own—not simply as clothing, but as a piece that preserves the value of traditional craftsmanship and the history of the brand for future generations.
