A Vintage-Inspired N-1 Deck Jacket Reinterpreted for Modern Everyday Wear

A piece based on the N-1 Deck Jacket, combining an authentic vintage character with a more wearable approach for contemporary city life.

Design
Inspired by the N-1 Deck Jacket adopted by the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Originally developed for deck crews exposed to cold sea winds, the N-1 combined a wind-resistant outer shell with a highly insulating lining. Its exceptional functionality and refined construction allowed it to remain popular as a military garment long after the war.
Rather than simply reproducing the original military jacket, BOW WOW reinterprets the N-1 from the perspective of modern everyday wear.
Inspired by the lighter way an N-1 could be worn with its original lining removed, the jacket features realistic fading and sun-bleached effects that recreate the appearance of a garment worn extensively over many years.
The rugged military silhouette characteristic of the N-1 is combined with the distinctive texture of wide-ribbed fabric, a particularly rare material among vintage pieces, creating a unique presence that goes beyond a conventional reproduction.
Unlike the fine-ribbed Jungle Cloth traditionally associated with the N-1 Deck Jacket, this matte-finish wide-ribbed piqué fabric was used only for a limited period around 1945, during the early production of the N-1. Original examples are extremely scarce on the vintage market, making this a particularly rare and valuable material.
In recent years, original military garments from the 1940s have become increasingly difficult to find worldwide. Some vintage stores now offer comparable pieces at increasingly high prices, in some cases exceeding ¥200,000.
Military garments are designed for demanding environments and therefore require reinforced construction around areas that experience significant tension during movement and dressing. The V-shaped stitching around the collar helps distribute stress and prevent the fabric from tearing.
A distinctly BOW WOW interpretation of the N-1 Deck Jacket, combining the functional beauty of military clothing with the character and aging of vintage garments as an essential part of the design.
A drawcord at the hem allows the silhouette to be adjusted while also providing additional protection against the cold.
Material
A 100% cotton outer fabric with moderate weight and structure, giving the jacket the rugged character associated with an N-1 Deck Jacket.
The wide-ribbed texture creates a distinctive three-dimensional surface reminiscent of vintage N-1 jackets.
A specially treated finish recreates authentic fading and sun-bleached effects, giving the garment the appearance of a piece that has been worn and aged over many years.
An alpaca-blend collar, one of the defining characteristics of the N-1 Deck Jacket.
The soft hand and distinctive hairy texture of alpaca are combined with the insulating properties of wool.

Buyer's Voice

This piece is based on the N-1 Deck Jacket adopted by the U.S. Navy during World War II, and it strongly reflects BOW WOW's approach to vintage-inspired craftsmanship.

What particularly stands out to me is the decision to use this rare wide-ribbed piqué fabric. The choice feels like something only possible from designer and vintage enthusiast Tadamori Gonkai, whose deep knowledge of vintage clothing is evident throughout the piece. You can really sense the maker's extensive understanding of clothing and its history.

At the same time, BOW WOW does not simply reproduce the vintage original. By removing the lining and refining the construction for contemporary fashion, the jacket becomes much easier to wear as an everyday piece.

At first glance, it may seem like a relatively expensive outerwear piece. However, for anyone who understands the rarity of the original materials and the level of detail that has gone into this reproduction, I think the price is actually very reasonable.
